TIPS FOR BUYING A USED CAR

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 | Automotive with

Buying a used car is not as easy it sounds to be. It can be quite a difficult task. The warranty or guarantee of a used car ends as soon as you leave the dealer’s premises. The car you buy today may not be good enough to be driven tomorrow. Enhancing our knowledge about what to look out for can only improve one’s odds of buying a car that still has plenty of life left in it.
The first point would be never to judge a book by its cover or a car by its looks. “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder” is a wonderful saying and can be used in almost every aspect of life. A car may as well be a little out of shape from the outside, but if the interior is in good shape and the engine runs well, then it’s an indication that the owner probably took good care of it while the exterior simply took a few bad hits.
However, an excessively damaged exterior could result in a bent frame which can be dangerous. When test driving the vehicle, make sure to check the alignment. Make sure that the car doesn’t pull to one side or the other and that it runs straight.
The next tip is to be aware of the reputation. Certain brands of cars are known for their reliability and long lasting nature. Some car brands have been around for quite some time and their continued existence is a proof enough of their strong reputation for long-lived motors. German imports are an example of cars built to high standards and, therefore, are often able to give you company for a long time.
Luxury vehicles do not need an expert to care for. These are designed with high precision in order to create as smooth a ride as possible. The engine as a result lasts longer, giving you value for money.
The third tip, a valuable one, is to contemplate with the idea of having a third-party auto shop give the car a look over. It will probably make you a little lighter on your wallet, but if you are serious about purchasing a particular vehicle, then spending a hundred dollars or so now could save you potentially thousands of dollars in future repair costs. As it goes, “prevention is better than cure”.
And if the mechanic finds everything is working just fine and gives you the clean chit, then you’ve just managed to buy yourself some peace of mind.
Looking for used cars can be time consuming and, at times, tests your determination. But a little knowledge beforehand about what to look for is what helps and will save you both time and money in the long run.
